Colombia’s capital and largest city Bogotá is located on a mountain plateau in the Cordillera Oriental. Medellín started as a gold-mining town and is now an important manufacturing center. Cali is a center for coffee production and has developed a commercial center. Other important commercial cities include Barranquilla a seaport and a major international airport and Cartagena a seaport and oil pipeline terminal.

Elementary education is free and compulsory for five years. Instruction in Roman Catholicism is required in all public schools, most of which are controlled by the Roman Catholic Church. The largest Colombian universities are the National University of Colombia in Bogotá, the University of Cartagena in Cartagena, the University of Antioquia in Medellín and the University of Nariño in Pasto.
