In 1991 the new independent states of Serbia and Montenegro were established and in 1992 the republics of Serbia and Montenegro formed the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY). In 2006 after the results of a a referendum on independence, Montenegro severed its ties with Serbia and the two became independent nations.

Serbian Orthodox education started during the rise of Raška in 12th century, when Serbs overwhelmingly embraced the Serbian Orthodox Church. The oldest college faculty dates back to 1778; founded in the city of Sombor as part of the Habsburg Empire.
Modern education in Serbia is regulated by the Ministry of Education. Children start in elementary schools at the age of seven, and remain there for eight years. After compulsory education students have the opportunity to either attend a high school for another four years, specialist school, for 2 to 4 years, or to enroll in vocational training, for 2 to 3 years. Following the completion of high school or a specialist school, students have the opportunity to attend university.
In Serbia the largest universities are: Belgrade, Kragujevac, Niš, Novi Sad, Pristina and Novi Pazar.
The University of Belgrade is the oldest, established in 1808. U of Belgrade has 31 faculties, and since its founding, has trained over 300,000 graduates. Other Serbian universities are Novi Sad (founded 1960), Kragujevac (founded 1976) and Niš (founded 1965).
