Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. Chittagong is the leading port. Khulna is a rapidly growing center for small-scale industry. Narayanganj is the inland port for Dhaka and Rajshahi is located in the silk-producing areas.

Bangladesh generally follows the free education model established by the British and provides free schooling for the first eight years, including five years of primary education. While most children are enrolled in primary schools, only 47 percent go on to secondary schools. Bangladesh has several universities: the University of Dhaka (1921) Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (1962), Jahangirnagar University (1970), Bangladesh Agricultural University (1961), the University of Chittagong (1966) and University of Rajshahi (1953). Colleges include Bangladesh College of Textile Technology (1950) and the Chittagong Polytechnic Institute (1962).
