Brasília is the capital of Brazil.
The largest city in Brazil is São Paulo. São Paulo is the main industrial center of Brazil. The former capital, Rio de Janeiro is second and is an important port, commercial center and tourist destination. Other important Brazilian cities include Salvador a regional capital in the Northeast and Belo Horizonte, a major industrial and commercial city in Minas Gerais. Manaus, a port on the Río Negro, Belém a northern coastal port on the mouth of the Amazon, Fortaleza and Recife also along the northeast Atlantic coast; Curitiba and Porto Alegre in the south; Goiânia, in the south central; and Guarulhos, a suburb of São Paulo.
Leading Federal, State and private universities are the University of Brasília, the University of São Paul, the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul. Other universites include schools of medicine, public health, law, social sciences, engineering, and mining.
